To all the single folks, may you soon meet your wife, husband, or destined one. To those who have already built a home and family, may you have a good boss, great friends, a spacious house, and a big white dog.
And most importantly— when life calls for a choice, may you stay true to yourself and never have regrets.
It is difficult to give an overall comment on the quality of the Mushoku Tensei Season 2 Blu-ray. On one hand, it features characteristic line art, watercolor-like backgrounds, and a heavy layer of temporal grain, which some viewers may find visually unappealing. On the other hand, the Blu-ray production demonstrates exceptionally skillful handling of temporal grain. It achieves a good balance between bitrate limitations and temporal grain structure, with local optimizations such as switching to non-moving grain in motion scenes. This is essentially a textbook example of good practice. As a result, although the Blu-ray set ambitiously includes 25 episodes, 11 non-credit episode variants, and a generous amount of special content within just four BD50 discs, leading to a video stream bitrate around 20 percent lower than usual, image artifacts typically associated with low bitrate are almost entirely absent. We tailored our post-processing pipeline to include only conservative anti-aliasing, debanding, and contra-sharpening steps. The chroma planes were reconstructed to restore damaged areas caused by the low bitrate. Our main focus was on the encoding step. Based on past experience, HEVC encodes using x265 are known to be inefficient for strongly grained animation. We observed this in our previous ripping work on Season 1 of Mushoku Tensei as well. To address the issue, we revisited AVC 10-bit encoding using the x264 encoder. The results were encouraging, as x264 appears to be exceptionally well suited for handling this specific type of temporal grain. In the end, we achieved nearly a 30 percent reduction in file size compared to using HEVC, while preserving a visual grain strength that closely matches the original source. Finally, credit must go to the hard work and patience of our team members, who efficiently resolved complex issues in the Blu-ray. These included, but were not limited to, extensive splicing of stream files, repairing audio and video synchronization, and patching missing segments of subtitle tracks.
